Delorme Earthmate PN-20

delorneearthmatepn20

The Delorme Earthmate PN-20 is a low-cost, high-sensitivity, fully integrated handheld GPS that delivers capabilities previously unavailable at any price. What separates the PN-20 from the other receivers is its ability to store and display topographic, aerial, and satellite images. The receiver ships with the full version of the newly-released Topo USA 7.0. The packages includes DeLorme Topo USA 7.0 DVD software with full, updated U.S. topographic and street maps to export as needed to your Earthmate PN-20. It also includes an on-device highway-level world base map.

In addition to the topographic and street maps on the included Topo USA 7.0 DVD-ROM, your purchase entitles you to $100 in new Data Download Dollars, good for supplementary data as Web downloads. Options include:

  • USGS 1:24,000 quad maps
  • NOAA nautical charts
  • High-resolution color aerial imagery - U.S. States
  • High-resolution color aerial imagery - Select U.S. Cities
  • Black-and-white aerial imagery
  • 10-meter color satellite imagery

Prices and coverage vary by dataset but, as an example, $100 of USGS quads cover 386 sq. miles.

Auto-routing functionality is built in, but limited. If you want the unit to direct you from address A to address B you have to use the Topo 6.0 software on your computer, to create the route and then upload it onto the device. The procedure is fast and straightforward once you learn how to do it. The software enables you to create via and stop points for your route, which can be useful. You can also calculate road-routes by clicking on start and end points on the map (ie without entering addresses). Once you enable auto-navigation, below the map will be displayed the distance and expected time to next turn, the name of the street or exit, and an arrow indicating the direction to turn.

One general drawback is the slow processor. Map redraws can take up to 30 seconds depending on what information is being loaded, though typically they take 5-10 seconds. Another drawback is the street maps are a tade crude. Even with the few drawbacks, the receiver is an excellent deal for all the maps included. On most other receiver brands, you will spend hundreds of dollars upgrading the maps.

Included With Purchase: Delorme Earthmate PN-20 receiver with 1 GB Secure Digital (SD) card, USB 2.0 cable, SD card reader/writer, Topo USA 7.0 DVD-ROM , and user manual.
